Why Open New Doors?

A bigger and more suitable home for Family & Children’s Service has been an urgent priority for several years.  A number of possibilities have been explored, but finding a building that answered the needs of an agency with such diverse services and clients has proved difficult. The condition, age, and size of our existing facilities made renovating the existing structures prohibitively expensive and untenable.

The Greenstate Building: Family & Children’s New Home

Now, Family & Children’s Service has finally found the right building.  Sited at 127 West State Street, “The Greenstate” building resolves virtually all of the inadequacies of our current facilities.  With a total of 22,000 square feet, this large, modern, centrally located, three story edifice has all the room Family & Children’s Service needs to provide our current services and to enhance and expand our services to meet the growing demand in the future.

The new facility includes inviting counseling space for individuals and families.  It has conference rooms, reception and waiting rooms, kitchens, ample bathrooms, and parking.  It has the space needed to create group therapy, observation, and other specialized rooms.  Best of all, it has been beautifully maintained and is in excellent condition, and it comes partially furnished.  It is also fully handicapped accessible, energy efficient, and meets or exceeds all current building codes.

The new building addresses, decisively and permanently, the limitations and deteriorating condition of the old sites.  Ultimately, it will consolidate all of agency’s services in one accessible and central location.

Transforming Lives

A Unique and Sustained Commitment to Children:

Whether a child is suffering from anxiety and depression or failing to thrive in a dysfunctional family, the right help at the right time can give young people the opportunity to lead a happy, healthy, and productive life and hope for a better future.

At a time when many family service organizations in New York are cutting back or eliminating programs that assist children, Family & Children’s Service of Ithaca has renewed its commitment to offer innovative mental health and psychiatric services to our youngest and most vulnerable community members.

These include our Zero to Five Project, our Children’s Crisis Outreach Program, and our Grandparents Raising Grandchildren support group.  In 2005, Family & Children’s Services made bringing child psychiatry to Tompkins County a top priority.  Today, there are two child psychiatrists at Family & Children’s Service providing evaluations and treatment for children and adolescents.

Caring for the Elderly:

Family & Children's Senior Services Program provides compassionate support for individuals and families caring for an older adult or an individual living with a disability.  Senior Services offers a continuum of care including Respite Care, Caregiver Counseling, and Geriatric Care Management to address the common challenges that confront caregivers

A Wide Range of Services that Make a Real Difference:

Family & Children’s Service also offers guidance, intervention, and support for troubled youths as an alternative to out-of-home placement or incarceration.   Many of our services are made available to the employees of more than sixty area businesses, schools, and not-for-profit agencies through our Employee Assistance Program.   In addition, Family & Children’s Service has developed a strong partnership with Cornell University’s Gannett Health Clinic and provides counseling to hundreds of graduate and undergraduate students, both on and off campus.
