Family & Children’s Service of Ithaca provides trauma informed education, counseling and training to kinship caregivers of youth who live, work or attend school in Tompkins County. KINECT engages kinship families in supportive and educational services to promote the safety, well-being, and permanency for children residing with relative adults.
Who is KINECT for?
Families raising relative children because the birth parent is unavailable
Children can be any type of relative to the caregiver if the caregiver is considered “family” by the parents by formal arrangements, through foster care or adoption, or through informal placements
Families adjusting to a newly placed child in their home
Families that have cared for a relative child for a longer period, but are experiencing a change in the child’s behavior, needs, or relationship with the birth parents
Families who need access to resources for either the relative child or the caregivers
Families who would benefit from supportive services
What services does KINECT provide?
Trauma-informed needs assessment
Referral to and support with accessing community resources
Advocacy within family court system, school system, the Department of Social Services, etc.
Educational resources that support mental health wellness
After-care consultation
Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Support Group
This monthly psycho-educational support group is facilitated by a F&CS therapist and addresses the unique challenges and issues facing grandparents raising grandchildren. Participants do not need to be an existing client of F&CS in order to attend these group sessions.
All KINECT services are provided to families free of charge.
