Family & Children’s Service has been a community-based agency for more than 130 years. We offer a full-service mental health clinic for all Tompkins County residents, as well as outreach services for our community’s most vulnerable populations including children, teenagers, and seniors.
Our Community & Continuing Education program offers a comprehensive array of alternative therapeutic support services to meet the counseling and support needs of our clients, staff, and the community-at-large.
This program’s startup funding was provided by generous community donors Pamela and Robert Swieringa. Pam, a former board member, wanted to help F&CS prioritize mental wellness opportunities for greater numbers of community members. Whenever possible, C&CE courses will be held in the new Pamela & Robert Swieringa Education Center, located on the second floor of Family & Children’s Service’s downtown Ithaca building on State Street.
Our expansion to a broad curriculum offering of wellness education highlights the commitment stated in our mission: to support, promote, and strengthen the well-being of individuals and families with high-quality, accessible mental health care and related social services.
Community Education: Our Community Education classes are open to anyone. These classes are designed to support positive change in individuals and the community, and they are offered in collaboration with local members and agencies.
These support groups, therapy groups, workshops, and enrichment programs help participants focus on strengthening vital life skills such as:
- Building or renewing identity and self-esteem.
- Developing strengths and talents.
- Identifying and building on personal potential.
- Strengthening self-awareness.
- Improving social abilities.
Continuing Education for Professionals: These courses provide advanced learning opportunities for social workers and related professionals.
Participants attend our workshops and seminars to advance their careers, gain increased skills to better meet the needs of their agencies and clients, and interact with their peers and instructors.
