Join this workshop learn and practice embodied/somatic de-escalation skills with Yael Saar and Virginia Smithson, LCSW-R, creators of the Sensory Nourishment Method.
Learn physiologically based and trauma informed skills for navigating and de-escalating volatile situations.
This three hour workshop explores accessible paths to reversing the natural stress response to rising tensions and tempers. You’ll learn how to use your senses to disarm the fight/flight/ freeze state from the inside out, such as by redirecting brain activity from the amygdala to the frontal lobes, stimulating oxytocin production to reduce cortisol, and tending to the vagus nerve to calm a racing heart and help settle your whole nervous system.
This process reduces your own reactivity and helps you respond thoughtfully and creatively to challenges. Since centering yourself has a calming effect on others, knowing how to do this in the moment will benefit you, as well as team or family members, clients and students, etc.
The tools are easy to learn, model, and teach. So useful anytime, and especially valuable in times of struggle and uncertainty it can help individuals, organizations and agencies foster harm reduction, better outcomes, while building trust and connection. Extra bonus: the same skills help prevent and heal burnout, reduce anxiety and frustration, and help you rest better.
This workshop is designed for practitioners such as social workers, nurses, teachers, public services providers, community center teams, grassroots organizers, etc. It’s also appropriate for parents and caregivers.
